2007-05-21Reviewer: Johnny HuangI bought this unit with high hopes. Thought it would be the big brother to my 200Gig external HDD. It promises to be network enabled, remote access, fast (Gigabit LAN) etc. 1. Network enabled : Yes you can plug it into a router/hub. But don't expect to use it like that. You'll have to install the WD Access Anywhere programe on your PC, create an account & log in (req Internet) before you can start writing to it. Requiring a constant internet connection before you can use the HDD is a complete error in concept, a HUGE inconvenience for people. 2. Remote Access : Once you are logged into the remote access software, you are meant to be able to remotely access your files. The drive is extremely unstable & often says "UNABLE TO MOUNT" or "OFFLINE" which requires you to reboot the drive (hard to do when you are REMOTELY trying to access it). 3. Fast (Gigabit LAN) : Not even close. 4. There are limitations on the types of files you can share also. You can share AVIs, MP3s, MPEGs etc. If you edit your own home videos or compose music etc, you won't be able to share the videos/music with your friends/family due to WD's stand on files that have "UNVERIFIABLE LICENSE".
I recommend checking out the WD Support site (support.wdc.com) first & read the other disspointed users comments if you are still thinking about buying this.
